private activity bond (PAB)

A municipal security that is issued by subdivisions of local government to a private investor in an effort to fund individual projects. Exempt from gross income and therefore beneficial in terms of tax liability, private activity bonds are often used by cities, townships and other local municipalities to attract private funding for projects that may feature some advantage to the general public.
